Indiana a state with a lot of great flags (and one amazing flag company)

Of all the state flags that are blue with a central element (usually a state seal) Indiana's flag is one of the only good ones. Paul Hadley designed it for the state's 1916 centennial contest and it was adopted in 1917: a gold torch for liberty and enlightenment, rays coming off it, and nineteen stars. Thirteen in an outer ring for the original colonies, five in an inner half-ring for the states that came next, and one big star above the torch for Indiana, the 19th state. (if you want to go deeper, there's an entire book about it!)

Indianapolis has a great flag as well (which we own the original in our HQ!). Designed by Roger Gohl in 1963 and voted the 8th best city flag by NAVA, it deserves way more use than it gets. We have a whole collection of Indianapolis flags, including garden flag, sticker, and patch versions, plus Indiana and Indianapolis Pride variants.

We're based in Fletcher Place, the heart of Indy. We're the Official Flag Supplier of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 just down the road. These flags are our bread and butter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the 19 stars on the Indiana flag mean?

The thirteen stars in the outer ring represent the original 13 colonies. The five in the inner half-ring are the states admitted between the original colonies and Indiana. The single large star above the torch represents Indiana, the nineteenth state to join the Union.

Who designed the Indiana flag?

Paul Hadley, a Mooresville artist, won the 1916 statehood centennial contest run by the Indiana Daughters of the American Revolution. The General Assembly adopted it in 1917 with one change: the word INDIANA added above the top star by the legislature. (Once again, politicians ruining a good thing...so we sell original versions of the flag without the unnecessary word).

What does the torch on the Indiana flag represent?

"Liberty and Enlightenment", with the rays standing for their far-reaching influence. (and us being based in Indy is part of that influence I guess...)

Do you sell Indianapolis and Indy 500 flags?

Yes! We're the Official Flag Supplier of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500.
